Both, the Tamil version [VINNAITHAANDI VARUVAAYAA] and also its Telugu adaptation [YE MAAYA CHESAVE] were considered path-breaking motion pictures. Though essentially a remake, EKK DEEWANA THA conjures memories of K. Balachander's roaring hit EK DUUJE KE LIYE. Menon is a master storyteller, no two opinions on that, but EKK DEEWANA THA fails to leave an impact for a valid reason: A beaten to death plot tends to stagnate after a point. Also, Menon overstays the hospitality by dragging the film in its second hour. Just when you think the story would conclude, Menon does a time travel and starts a new chapter in this never-ending love story. That, honestly, only makes this snail-paced movie a taxing and cumbersome experience.
On the whole, EKK DEEWANA THA has a few sparkling moments, that's about it. However, it lacks the fizz for the spectator to go deewana!

3 Ups and 3 Downs: Fresh pair with a partially good on-screen chemistry trying to be a part of a lovey-dovey love story could be one reason to give it a try. A dragged storyline which is not worth the climax disappoints. Girls, who can endure anything for a feel good factor to see a guy madly in love with a girl, can too grab a ticket. Overall, Ek Deewana Tha entertains sporadically.

AR Rahman's musical score is the major attraction in the technical front and the his composition 'Hosanna' is pick of everyone. MS Prabhu has contributed some stunning visuals and he has wonderfully captured the scenic beauty of Kerala. Manu Rishi's dialogues are commendable. However, editor Anthony Gonsalves could have cut short the length of the movie.
In a nutshell, Ek Deewana Tha is good romantic thriller and this can be good for this Valentine's season.

What’s Good: A few light scenes; the Hosanna song.
What’s Bad: The routine story; the weak screenplay; lack of feeling of empathy for the two lead characters.
Verdict: Ekk Deewana Tha will go largely unnoticed by the audience.
Loo break: Several in the post-interval portion.
Watch or Not?: Watch it for the Hosanna song.

Like for instance, Prateik is wasted in this film. He is a talented actor and making him do the same things he did, just a release ago in MY FRIEND PINTO is not really exploiting his talent. It also means that there was no meat in the script.

Through his struggle and strive to win his lady love, Sachin keeps ranting one line, “Duniya mein itni ladkiyan hain par mujhe Jessie se hi pyaar kyun hua?” Perhaps, because Jessie Jaisi Koi Nahin? But the question you will find yourself pondering over through the film will be, “Multiplex mein itni movies hain, phir maine iss movie ka ticket hi kyun liya?”

Song starts, music video plays, hero broods, heroine pouts, both dance. And then we go back to the baffling questions again: Will the couple get together? Won't they? He stalks; she disappears, then reappears, she likes him, but maybe not, gets married, or perhaps doesn’t…. Oh, just get a room, and get it over with.

While there are directors who dig relentlessly for a new theme around which a rom-com can be built, there are others such as Gautham Menon who believe old cliches are the best plot points for a love story. For starters, the girl is a year older to the boy. Then they come from different religions. The boy is a passionate movie buff, hopes to make a career in films. The girl's family doesn't even watch films. The girl's brother is a toughie who needs an excuse to start a fight. But there is something called love at first sight. You get the drift.
Ek Deewana Tha is the Hindi remake of Gautham Menon's Tamil film Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya which was a huge commercial hit. Somewhere, something obviously got lost in translation.

Ek Deewana Tha is a never ending saga that you so wish should end! Easily avoided. Listen to Hosanna on radio instead!

Prateik spends a lot of time in the movie dancing around Amy, kissing her on her firmly closed mouth, and wearing linen suits he could ill afford on his assistant director's salary. We lose patience with him even though he tries desperately hard to infuse some energy into the proceedings. We are supposed to feel the longing he has for Amy. We only feel the irritation. Get on with it guys you want to say. Come to the point. By the time they do you are exhausted, and want to do what Prateik says Amy's character did to his feelings-showed him the middle finger. So there.

All in all, ‘Ekk Deewana Tha’ is a movie that seems to have been lost in translation. However, Prateik deserves praise for his efforts. Also, the cinematography scores well, and some marvellously shot scenes in Kerala are a visual treat. Manu Rishi, who plays the role of Prateik’s older buddy, is charming. The few laughs that the actor delivers are truly enjoyable.

The translation of Deewana can have different connotations from crazy to mad. Ekk Deewana Tha starts as a cool and crazy love story but by the end it could make you mad.

Trisha was too good in the Tamil original version! I was disappointed watching the Telugu movie too. I will watch the Hindi version.....just for the music, the picturization.....but I am sure I will still love only the Tamil version. People watch it with subtitles on youtube, Trisha is just too perfect in that role.
nice written
