Cricket, Hockey, Football, Boxing... now Ice Hockey! Sport-centric films are gradually finding their way on the Hindi screen. BREAKAWAY aka SPEEDY SINGHS brings several knows names from U.S., Canada and India in this cross-cultural family drama with Ice Hockey as the backdrop.
Like BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM much earlier and PATIALA HOUSE more recently, SPEEDY SINGHS also looks at the generation gap between the older generation [Anupam Kher, in this case], who hold tightly to traditional values and the younger generation [Vinay Virmani], who have already adapted themselves to the adopted country [Canada]. SPEEDY SINGHS has a plot you can connect with instantly, but the film suffers on varied counts. Akshay Kumar makes a cameo in the film -- in a sequence first and in the song during the end credits.
On the whole, SPEEDY SINGHS fails to deliver.

The film comes perilously close to skidding off the edge time and again. If it doesn’t, it isn’t for any great merit in the script. It is just that the film’s ambitions are so limited that even when it hits the wall and collapses, it manages to pull itself up and return to the safety of its constricted sphere of operation. Speedy Singhs isn’t interested in going anywhere in particular.
If you happen to be in the mood for charity, you could actually look at this entire concoction quite differently. Speedy Singhs derives its plot conventions from a multiplicity of genres. It’s a sports flick, a family drama, a Hollywood rom-com and a fluffy, feel-good Bollywood ride all rolled in one. Take your pick.
Lead actor Vinay Virmani, likeable on the screen, turns in a competent performance, as do Kher and Lowe. American actress Camilla Belle, Canadian stand-up comedian Russell Peters and Indian-American actress Noureen DeWulf do their best within the limitations of the screenplay. But as with much else in Speedy Singhs, they end up being caricatures.

Sports films have always subscribed to a recipe that guarantees success. A little more or less and you can be assured of indigestion. If you're going to watch this film, you know you're headed for a 'Happy Singh ever after' and that is exactly what you will get.

Speedy Singhs is a refreshing watch with just the right amount of masala. There’s romance, humour, emotions just in the right mix. People will relate to it in one way or the other and then they have added Russel Peters which is a big plus.
Verdict: Worth a watch for its humour.

Speedy Singhs is a smart little surprise package. It's a cheerful film that makes you smile with its subtle humour, its repartee-filled screenplay, its deftness at handling the umpteen relationships and its finely-nuanced performances. A little more spice and edge to the delineation of the game itself would have made the film an action-packed adventure too. Nevertheless, Speedy Singhs, with a guest appearance by Akshay Kumar (as himself), is an entertaining watch.
