It's the crackling chemistry between John Abraham and Akshay Kumar which makes Desi Boyz such a fun film. The guy bonding between them had already been showcased in Garam Masala but this film carries the camaraderie even further. True, the film doesn't boast of anything that even comes close to an intelligent quotient, but the perfectly tuned tango, salsa, hip hop between the boyz gives it a spicy edge and keeps you in your seats, goofily munching your popcorns.

What’s Good: Performances; several comic punches; the music.

Loo break: None.

3 Ups and 3 Downs:
Honest performances, music, fast-paced screenplay and cinematography get a thumps up. Weak storyline, poor characterization and clumsy first half are the weak points.
On the whole, Desi Boyz is surely a one-time watch with Sanjay Dutt’s presence a USP of the film.

Debut director Rohit Dhawan opens the film with a recession-hit UK. Apart from shop signs that say 'No hiring, only firing', he shows banks offices literally collapsing (special effects).
The cast does well. Akshay and John work well together and make us root for their bromance.
Deepika is lovely but stuck playing The Girlfriend - a vague character with no ambition, career, or even a hobby - persistently in the 'waiting-for marriage' state.
Chitrangda plays the more interesting, layered role of a professor who has a crush on her student.
The finale that takes place in a court is too sharp a detour. But if you can bear with that, Desi Boyz is a fun ride.

Akshay Kumar and John Abraham are superb in their respective roles. As far as their acting is concerned, there seems to be a tough competition between the two. Their telepathic conversation in the film is very humourous. Their chemistry is awesome. Deepika grabs the eyeball with her acting, while Chitrangada Singh is a treat to watch. Sanjay Dutt, Anupam Kher and Omi Vaidya also brighten up the screen with their hilarious acts.
Overall, Desi Boyz is a good entertainer, which can be enjoyed by comedy lovers.

There is that special something that really makes the film tick. Is it the Dhawan magic, or Rocco and Hunter's escapades or Radhika and Tanya (Chitrangada's) timely introductions into scenes? Even though you may call it the typical Bollywood flick, there is that 'X' factor which, I feel, will help it make safely through the first week.
John and Akshay, after GARAM MASALA, team up again and both are good. Deepika is moving confidently from film to film and establishing her credentials as an actress to be reckoned with in the Top 5 category. Chitrangada manages to impress in her brief role while Sanju baba, walks in with attitude, and leaves receiving the maximum taalis.
The mix is good and it's sure to create a buzz if not a furor at the Box-office.

Shakal Pe Mat Ja Review

Shakal Pe Mat Ja Review By:
Nikhat Kazmi - Times Of India - Ratings 2/5
Brave effort by a group of youngsters to make a film which has been co-produced by Hrishitaa Bhatt (actor) and directed by Shubh, the hero of the film. There is a sincere effort by these newbies to script and create a comedy of errors centred round the issue of terrorism and the paranoia it has created all over. But seriously, can't say how apt it is to fool around with such a sensitive topic and create parodies out of terror czars like Osama. Here, you have Omama ( Zakir Hussain) and his terror network, Al-Baqaeda, hellbent on creating mayhem in India and outdoing the antics of Osama. Of course, Omama and his jihadis are bumbling buffoons. Now how funny is that?
Shakal Pe Mat Ja Review By:
Super Good Movies - Ratings 1.5/5
The basic idea of the story is decent. However, the execution fails big time. There is nothing that the director does to save this film. It is too loud, a khichadi of everything that has a little bit a predictable thrill, been there seen that comedy, a nagging girlfriend, spoof of Baba Ramdev, Al Queda, Osama, and more. There is no novelty in the film but it shows a little hope in parts.
The stupid fart and porn jokes become deterrent in the flow of the story. The main issue is that it takes too long to come to the point and by then the audience has lost interest.
Shakal Pe Mat Ja Review By:
Dailybhaskar.com  - Ratings 2/5
SPMJ rests on a very conventional storyline, which lacks lustre in the terms of a poor screenplay. The effort of making a political satire falls flat, as the filmmaker goes overboard while tackling the subject. In fact, some portions of the story have an uncanny resemblance with SRK starrer Baadshah and Ali Zafar’s Tere Bin Laden. Dialogues prove to be the saving grace of the movie but, become monotonous after a point of time, as the plot thickens. Some good performances, dialogues and experimental editing are the strong points. Loopholes in screenplay, a thin storyline and confusing direction are the weaknesses.
On the whole, Shakal Pe Mat Ja doesn’t leave a mark at all and can be easily given a miss.

Taran Adarsh - Bollywood Hungama - Ratings 1.5/5
Shakal Pe Mat Ja is one of those whacked-out satires that sounds far funnier on paper than on screen.First-time director Shubh shows a flair for comic moments and like I pointed out earlier, a few sequences do make you smile/laugh. But the writing is devoid of fun and far from watertight. On the whole, SHAKAL PE MAT JA is one of those whacked-out satires that sounds far funnier on paper than on screen.

Speaking of script, it has been credited to Shubh Mukherjee, who incidentally is also the director and the lead actor.
Of late, we have had films like LOOT and MILEY NAA MILEY HUM and BE-CAREFUL. SHAKAL PE MAT JA is one of those!

Another sore point of the film is the jarring background score. It's painfully loud to a point of challenging your tolerance. Music is decent but would've worked better had it been picturised well. Actors like Amna Shariff and Saurabh Shukla are wasted. Harshal, Chitrak and Dhruv add to the agony.
To sum it up, one shouldn't go by the looks of Shakal Pe Mat Ja and definitely pay heed to this review. The film is easily avoidable.

Rockstar Review

Written By Manish Garg on Friday 11 November 2011 | 19:55

AVERAGE RATINGS OF 15 REVIEWS - 3.1/5
Star Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Nargis Fakri

ROCKSTAR Review By:
Nikhat Kazmi - Times Of India - Ratings 4/5
Leave it to Imtiaz Ali to take a love story and present it in a manner that's completely different from run-of-the-mill Bollywood. Romance, under his creative vision, becomes a multi-layered, sensitively nuanced, monumental experience which has more to do with serenading your soulmate rather than a stereotypical marriage partner. With intelligent entertainers like Jab We Met, Love Aaj Kal and now Rockstar, he is evolving as a new age Yash Chopra. Love literally smoulders under his narrative, albeit in a completely modern idiom.
The highpoint of Rockstar is it's high tension, high-on-passion romance between two unlikely people: the completely low brow JJ who doesn't like his girls nice and clean and Heer (Nargis Fakhri), the uptown Stephenian who is all set to get married and settle down to sweet domesticity like all sweet girls do.
ROCKSTAR Review By:
Aniruddha Guha - DNA India - Ratings 4/5
Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar is a bittersweet journey of a man, an artist, from being an everyman to a superstar. But while Ali uncovers layers off Jordan the iconic musician -- each layer as fascinating as it is intriguing -- he keeps the core of the character, Janardhan Jakhad, alive. But while good acting is always an incentive, it’s a director’s vision that makes a film truly watchable, and Imtiaz deserves credit for trying his hand at something different from what the mainstream churns out every week. And for bringing back the one aspect sorely missing from Hindi films lately music.

Sukanya Verma - Rediff - Ratings 3.5/5
Rockstar is essentially a love story between two very curious individuals, writes Sukanya Verma.
Indeed, Ranbir Kapoor is not an everyday occurrence. He's proved himself to be more than a portfolio and a surname with his absolutely marvelous ability to connect with the audience in a brand new skin each and every time. And that he's accomplished this in merely four years and 9 films is no mean feat.  Therefore, even though, the above-mentioned prediction, coming in the astute words of Shammi Kapoor, is meant for the unruly, untamed genius of Janardhan Jakhar aka Jordan, it holds true for his grand nephew as well. Our lad is meant for epic things.

Go watch it for Ranbir and Imtiaz’s direction. A must watch for all true lovers.
Imtiaz Ali in all his films, be it ‘Jab We Met’ and ‘Luv Aaj Kal’ portrayed passionate true love and he goes a step further with this one. His storytelling is par excellence and is commendable. Another thing that’s worth mentioning is the way he makes his actors perform. The first half an hour is absolutely desi and will totally connect to the masses. The rest of the film, however is very international and good production values. Though, it does get a bit repetitive in the second half.

Taran Adarsh - Bollywood Hungama - Ratings 3/5
Rock based movies are revered and admired in Hollywood, but Bollywood hasn't been too kind to this genre. Imtiaz Ali has always managed to strike the right balance between the hoi polloi and the gentry. Movies like JAB WE MET and LOVE AAJKAL are proof that the enormously talented raconteur won't attempt a film if he's not fully convinced about it. Known for his imaginative and inventive take on love stories, Imtiaz takes up yet another challenge with ROCKSTAR. The story of a rebellious singer/musician, it traces his journey of love, anguish, ego, trouble, sorrow and devastation. A difficult path to tread, no doubt, but Imtiaz could be a game changer, if the film strikes a chord. Alas! ROCKSTAR is a sumptuously shot movie that is disjointed on script level. On the whole, ROCKSTAR does not live up to the confidence and expectations from the otherwise very skilled and accomplished film-maker Imtiaz Ali. The film suffers immensely due to a disorderly screenplay, especially in its post-interval portions. However, the silver lining or the comforting prospect is the virtuoso performance by Ranbir Kapoor and the captivating score by A.R. Rahman, which justify that one extra star.

Dailybhaskar.com  - Ratings 3/5
With a flawless first half, courtesy- an engaging narration which strikes a good balance between flashback and present, Rockstar starts on a very good note. From showcasing the Delhi college culture to the scenic beauty of Kashmir and some extremely fun-filled dialogues, the film surely rocks in first half, but falls flat on the face as second half begins. Transitions and inter-cuts lasting for almost 25 minutes make it a boring affair as the filmmaker seems to be beating around the bush with a strange stagnation in terms of storyline.Overall, Rockstar is a one-time watch and worth a treat for both the fans and non-fans of Ranbir Kapoor, as he does complete justice to his character.

Kaveree Bamzai - India Today - Ratings 2/5
There are moments of great beauty in the film. The heart-stopping duet between Shammi Kapoor and Ranbir; the Kun Faaya Kun song in the Nizamuddin dargah; the hilarious massage scene involving a leopard print underwear-clad music baron, Piyush Mishra; or even Ranbir dancing in a trance at a nightclub, transported into another world. But instead of taking the audience along on his journey of pain, the audience is increasingly frustrated. Too many things are left unexplained. How does Janardhan become such a symbol of rage -- does it really just take a single act of breaking in and entering a foreign country to make him the emblem of Free Tibet, angry Kashmiris and angry Khalistanis? Why does Heer not just run away with him?

Martin D'Souza - Glamsham - Ratings 3/5
If an actor can have you riveted to your seat for the entire length of the movie and you see nothing else but just sheer brilliance in every twist in his character; that's 'paisa vasool, time respected, audience is baap' approach.
Ranbir Kapoor is all that and much more as he metamorphoses from Janardhan Jhakar, a nerdy college student from Delhi, to Jordan, an iconic Rockstar. Everytime he is on screen, everything and everyone blurs into the background. It's Ranbir and only Ranbir you see. This guy is a genius. Period. As the nerdy college student, he brings in that freshness that is originally naive. He becomes the character. As a friend to Heer (debutante Nargis Fakhri), who plays the 'rich chick, hard-to-get diva', he is platonic to the core. As the Rockstar, guitar in hand, he resembles someone who has been born with the stringed instrument. If only Imtiaz had curtailed his obsession and let some scenes go, ROCKSTAR could have achieved cult status like ROCK ON.
The ratings are strictly for Ranbir and A R Rahman's music.

A large crowd queued up outside Verona Arena, Italy, one of the most renowned places of Italy, eager fans awaiting for the concert of Jordan to start, and amidst all this a dishevelled and unkempt looking rockstar breaks through the clout of cops after a fight into the arena showing complete disregard to his fans, storms onto the stage with a rage and croons to his hearts content.Over all, Rockstar may not be one of the finest attempts but is definitely worth a watch for its pleasing first half and the ace performance of Ranbir Kapoor.

One India - Ratings 3/5
Rockstar, directed by Imtiaz Ali stars Nargis Fakhri and Ranbir Kapoor in the lead. The film begins well with very interesting fun filled moments. Rockstar is able to immediately connect with the audience as the scene shifts between the past and the present.
However, the second half gets a little monotonous and the narration becomes a little weak. Another drawback in Rockstar is the 'realism' part. Many sequences in the film are hard to believe and one cannot help but opine that Imtiaz could have dealt with it more realistically. The scene between Ranbir and Shammi Kapoor is very nice to watch, apart from many other light moments.
The background score by AR Rahman is extremely good and uplifts your mood. The music and songs are capable of drifting you to another world.

Saibal Chatterjee - NDTV - Ratings 2.5/5
Rockstar is a gig gone wrong. And that is sad. For there is much in the film that is worth commending. Anil Mehta’s cinematography is flawless all the way through, across the varied locations, settings and moods.
AR Rahman’s outstandingly lively and eclectic musical score presents a wide range of sounds blended into a harmonious whole.
Ranbir’s Shammi Kapoor act on a boat on the Dal Lake (he sings Chand Sa Roshan Chehra) is probably worth the price of the ticket, if the recently deceased Bollywood icon’s cameo in the film isn’t.
Moreover, writer-director Imtiaz Ali’s sensibility ensures that Rockstar, for the most part, steers well clear of the cliches that usually hound the average Bollywood love story.

What’s Good: The performances; the music; the look of the film; the photography and locations.
What’s Bad: A couple of questions unanswered in the film; the class appeal of the film; the dark and depressing portions of the second half.
Verdict: Rockstar will meet with a mixed response: one section of the audience (mainly youngsters in the cities) will love it while another section (mainly the single-screen audience and public of smaller cities) will find it ordinary.

Imtiaz Ali's 'Rockstar' is a love story between Janardhan Jakhar (Ranbir Kapoor) and Heer (Nargis Fakhri). Janardhan is a naïve Haryanvi college going buffoon. He is rustic with no confidence in his own talent, but cherishes the dream of becoming a rockstar. With a hairdo and clothes that resemble the fashion of the early 1970s, Janardhan, or JJ as he calls himself, is constantly trying to ape rockstar Jim Morrison and is constantly seeking a formula to become one. With some beautiful wide angle shots, the film captures scenic Kashmir, Prague and Delhi in a way that has not been seen in the recent past. The editing too is crisp but the last half hour is agonisingly similar to Shahid Kapoor's 'Mausam'. It just goes on and on.
The dialogues are refreshingly rustic and funny. And Ranbir's performance is amazing, he lifts up the movie every which way. For him, 'Rockstar' is worth a watch.

In short, “Rockstar” is the story of the young guy, who sheds off his identity of Janardan to become Jordan. He faces almost all the biggest happiness and sorrows in his life.
Janardan sees everything in his life. Though, he is from a normal College guy background, he reaches the peak of success, by becoming an International Rockstar. How he achieves his dreams and what happens after that, forms the remaining part of the movie and the crux of the Story.

Director Imtiaz Ali won half the battle when he got AR Rahman to compose the music for his film. Ranbir Kapoor helps him conquer the other half.
So you’ve seen the promos and think you know what the film’s about? Actually, there’s a lot more to it. Rockstar is not just a journey of an aspiring musician. It also charts the main lead’s spiritual path and highlights that just making it big in life doesn’t lead to inner happiness. Inspired by the writings of Sufi poet Rumi, the film is layered and delivers the goods without getting boring.
