Even the cinegoers are busy bringing in the New Year. But to break the reverie comes in a film Kya Yahi Sach Hai that boasts of shaking our belief in the law and political system. The promotional tactics of the film have been to question every current political and social issue raising a question as if the film were to answer it.

Movie Review: Don 2 is a classic action/crime thriller that doesn't let go, even for a moment. More importantly, the plot has been finely crafted, with every twist and turn falling into place like a complicated albeit neat little jigsaw. With a canvas that goes on a cross-country ride -- Thailand, Malaysia, Zurich, Berlin -- the film challenges you to hop aboard its high speed scuttle and attentively follow the exploits of its glamorous gangster. One who oscillates between two avatars -- Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible) and James Bond -- without losing out on his desi charisma.

What keeps Don 2 alive, then, is its pulsating action. It helps the pace quicken as the film progresses, including a thrilling chase sequence and a wonderfully choreographed-and-shot pre-climax sequence. Cinematographer Jason West (Rock On) and stunt director Matthias Barsch enthuse life into proceedings, ensuring that action junkies get their fill.

The film, however, is nothing more than an attempt to cash in; to set opening weekend records. And to provide a vehicle for its lead star to dazzle (so much so, every other actor seems inconsequential). Thankfully, Shah Rukh Khan is in form. The body language is cocky, the attitude flamboyant, and the smirk consistent. In a full-fledged action role, Khan goes the whole hog, pulling off the stunts with panache. Only for him, Don 2 is pretty enjoyable.

Verdict: Don 2 is a winner. It will score at the box-office and yield good profits to all concerned.

Loo break: A couple in the first half.

Watch or Not?: Definitely watch it for Shah Rukh Khan’s performance and the stylised narration.

3 Ups and 3 Downs:  Shah Rukh Khan, direction, cinematography, dialogues and the editing are the strong points. Lack of songs, subtracting down the Bollywood masala element from the film, which was prevalent in Don, a sluggish screenplay in first half, are the weak points.

On the whole, Don 2 is a perfect combination of style with substance. Definitely a one-time watch for one and all and treat for SRK fans.

There's an easy way to describe Don2 without any spoilers. Think of great action flicks from the Lethal Weapon, Die Hard and MI4 series. Shake them up.

Replace Nakatomi Plaza with Berlin's leading bank and there it is - Don 2 - a Bollywood take on great action flicks where Shah Rukh wants to show that being a bad-ass is fun. 

Post the RA.One disaster, a lot of hopes ride upon SRK to prove he is a bankable box office star and Don 2 works hard to re-establish the fact that SRK can scale walls, blow up cars, look and act menacing despite the irritating laugh (seriously, he doesn't lose that).3D is a waste, so don't fret if you haven't booked for a 3D show. In fact, don't fret if you haven't booked a show at all.

The King is yet to return. Meanwhile since Hrithik's cameo is the highpoint of the film, I'll go with 2.5 stars, for the film.

Don 2, Akhtar's latest, is a glossy, unashamed action offering polished within an inch of itself, visually coming together seamlessly and effectively. The floors shine enough to reflect stampeding boots (which also shine), explosives obey their detonators, guns click into place with satisfyingly precise and appropriately amplified CLICKS, cars chase each other with murderous grace, and the bad guy -- when not wearing a pretty face -- is clad in white and reluctant to kneel because of the potential punishment to his trousers.

After a promotional explosion for Ra.One, astute businessman Shah Rukh Khan kept a slightly low profile for his latest release Don 2 and chose to make his film viral among the youth by coining 'Don'isms. The Donisms turned out to be a hit among the youngsters just like the PJs on Rajinikanth almost turning Don into a separate entity. When I saw Shah Rukh mouthing self-obsessed Donisms too in the movie, I wondered if he too was referring to someone else but himself! 

Right from the first scene that has Don's voice over declaring himself to be a king of drug cartels who has all the other cartels across the globe vying to kill him in order to eliminate competition, you know you are in for a self-obsessed and boastful marathon.

She is not convincing as the character she plays and is as clueless as Farhan and SRK. Om Puri looks as stunned as the rest of the cast while a role etched out for Kunal Kapoor is laughable. Even Aly Khan who was impressive in a movie released two weeks ago, JO HUM CHAHEIN (Featuring two debutants), is left groping in the dark. Boman Irani, what have they Don(e) with you!

What helps this mostly formulaic film forward is the spiffy camerawork and a music score that's catchy and fresh, especially the glossy Ishq hothon se number, shot in picturesque Ladakh.
'Jo Hum Chahein' endeavors to strike a fresh note, but alas, it's let down by the weight of its trite dialogues. I'm going with two out of five for 'Jo Hum Chahein' – it's a decent first effort, even though it smacks of sameness.

PAPPU CAN'T DANCE SAALA is about two people from different worlds. Vidyadhar [Vinay Pathak] has just shifted from Banaras to Mumbai. A man with old world values who finds it difficult to adjust in the city... Mehak [Neha Dhupia] is a dancer in Bollywood. She has learned the tricks of surviving in this fast-paced city. She is loud and jazzy... They're neighbors who, due to certain circumstances, somehow get stuck in the same flat... and thus begins their story!
PAPPU CAN'T DANCE SAALA is unlike a Saurabh Shukla film. This time, to quote him, he's gone 'commercial', aiming for the mass audience. PAPPU CAN'T DANCE SAALA shows promise at the start; the character of Vinay Pathak specifically seems straight out of life. Though Vinay has been cast in a similar mould in the past, the actor brings that variation in his character that makes the goings-on watchable. Also, the sequences when Vinay and Neha clash -- first, when Neha organizes a party at her flat and next, when they meet the members of the Society to voice their grievances -- are truly enjoyable.

Pappu finds his girl in an agitated mode once. He quickly diagnoses her condition to be pre-menstrual stress, gifts her sanitary napkins. Is Pappu an imbecile? Or, wait; this is supposed to be funny? Okay, then.

With his first film we hoisted Ranveer Singh high above our shoulders because he scoffed at Shah Rukh Khan and very memorably told a bride how weddings didn't need superstars; now, in his second film, he has an SRK  dialogue as his caller-tune, and all it forces us to notice is how far he is from the Shah Rukh standard of superstardom.

Director Maneesh Sharma grounds his characters in reality, but unlike last year’s charming Band Baaja Baaraat, this time he’s saddled with a clunky script. Good for him, he’s got actors he can count on. Anushka Sharma is in fine form as the pushy salesgirl who’s hired for this improbable mission, but the script asks so little of her. Ranveer Singh is competent and gets some lovely moments to shine – watch how he virtually casts a spell on a girlfriend’s parents when he carries her home in the wee hours of the morning, promising them he’ll always safeguard her dignity – but after a crackling debut as a quirky unconventional lead last year, with this film he’s struggling to fit into the traditional definition of a star.

I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five for director Maneesh Sharma’s 'Ladies vs Ricky Bahl'. It’s an easily watchable film with much to smile about. Pity it could’ve been so much more fun.

Both are so thin that they seem to be Close-Up smiles morphed on amazingly agile bodies. When both actors forget to smile quite so much, they actually do a good job. And Ranveer is a good actor, only Yash Raj has to stop referencing Shah Rukh Khan every time they cast him-in Band Baaja Baraat they made him dance instead of the Khan at a wedding. In Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, they make him download a Baazigar dialogue as his caller tune which has a starring role.

Dilli ka tadka, Mumbai ka masala, Lucknow ki nazakat, Goa mein shararat : you can fit 'Ladies vs Ricky Bahl' into these segments, along with their components, and you get a film which is more blah than Bahl. Ask any self-respecting Dilliwali , and she will tell you abe yaar, Bahls can be anything but that.
Ask Dimple Chaddha (Chopra), the ace-in-the-hole of this film. She lives in a gargoyle of a house, has a property dealer father who wears a red velvet gown which matches his hennaed hair, and a mother who believes her darling daughter is off to a sangeet rather than the 'disc' she is headed to. Off with the lehenga, on with the boob tube, and she’s all set. So is the object of her affection, a buff gym trainer, head-band, muscles and all, who happily leads her up the garden path.

Welcome Sunny, Diego, Malhotra... the various aliases of Ranveer Singh. He has successfully conned 30 PYTs. The 31st 'victim' proves to be a little tricky. The con is now on him? Will he fail? Or will he, as usual, walk away with another fat booty?

 The Dirty Picture is essentially Vidya Balan's film, all the way. She gives a towering performance as the protagonist who remains unapologetic about her life till the very end. The high point of her act is the fact that despite portraying a sex bomb, her sexuality never ever gets vulgar and crude. Instead, there is an endearing quality to her attempts to shock and awe a staid society that thrives on the fake. Her tour de force act however doesn't throw the male leads into the shadows. They manage to hold their own in full measure, despite the relative meagerness of their roles. Also, it is the naughty dialogues (Rajat Arora) of the film which add immense flavour to the proceedings. It's a no-holds-barred screenplay which rightly refuses to treat sex as a four letter word. Kudos to Milan Luthria for handling such a controversial theme with such sensitivity and boldness.
The Dirty Picture is definitely not only your film for the week, but is a seminal work that will be studied in feminist discourses.

Yes, there's much to nitpick about, especially that whimper of an ending and much, much squandered potential. But, with the exception of Kapoor, it's mostly well acted: Hashmi and Shah keep things interesting, Anju Mahendroo makes us wish the journalist had more to do, and Rajesh Pratap is always super. Also, the film does push the envelope, Luthria keeps the pace snappy except for the last half-hour, and like any schoolboy would attest, pretty much anything can be forgiven if the breasts look good enough. They do, and Vidya Balan ensures we notice that there's a heart of a heroine thumping energetically away right behind them. It's a performance to be grateful for.
So thank you, Ms Balan. (If your dress weren't as low-cut, I'd ask you to take a bow.)

There are many moments in the film where you will catch your breath, at Balan's sheer audacity of expression, verbal and visual. She dances on a newly acquired Maruti 800 (it's the 80s, remember) to distract attention from a party she is not invited to. She kisses the brother to make the other one jealous. She eats sugar when is starving to keep herself going.
She may not be earthy enough for critics who have lusted after the real Silk in their youth. But she is all woman, and she is all sensuousness in a performance that is brave, bold and completely natural.
Balan is indeed a woman of our times, where public samaan dekhti hai, dukaan nahin. Silk is a character worthy of her.

Martin D'Souza - Glamsham - Ratings 4.5/5

This film has a tightly bound script with just one loose sheaf. And frankly speaking, it's unfair on director Milan Luthria because Vidya Balan's electrifying performance, leaves the rest gasping for breath. You just see her grasp the character and make it larger than life. This is perhaps her best performance till date. Even Naseeruddin Shah gracefully blends into the background as the 'Hero' takes Centre stage.
THE DIRTY PICTURE is in line for a flood of awards. Vidya Balan will walk away with all possible trophies!
To borrow one more line from Rajat's dialogues... Yeh ladki aag lagaegi!

The Dirty Picture has a rich production values and Vishal-Shekhar's music is the major attraction in the technical front. Their compositions like 'Ooo La La', 'Ishq Sufiyana' are 'Honeymoon Ki Raat' are the pick of everyone. Pony Prakash Raj's choreography and Bobby Singh's cinematography are excellent in these songs. Akiv Ali's editing is also commendable.
Overall, The Dirty Picture is a right blend of wonderful script, amazing direction and bold performance from the lead actors. The movie has a universal theme and mass appealing story. This movie is a good entertainer.

Above all, the enterprise belong to Vidya Balan. She’s extraordinary: gutsy, consistently in character and unafraid of exposing her darker side. Here’s the kind of complex performance which you haven’t evidenced in years and years. This award-winning act bookended by her contrasting portrayal in No One Killed Jessica, reaffirms her as the finest artiste on the scene today. No contest!
You may have some issues with The Dirty Picture. Never mind because Ms Balan rocks big time. Cheers.

Luthria seems to have been stuck between making a wholly commercial product and staying true to the story. While he does balance it well for most part, and quite efficiently too, he could have done without resorting to convenient twists in the film towards the end. His isn’t really a biopic, surely not an authentic one, as he picks up the threads from different sources (Suryakant seems to be influenced by two-three superstars, for example) and uses it to his advantage (he never claimed to make an authentic telltale, so it’s okay). Sadly, though, he fails to make Silk’s downward spiral as engaging as her rise to fame.
With a highly entertaining first half, and a mediocre second, The Dirty Picture falls short of being truly remarkable. But for that ‘boombaat’ of a performer, Vidya Balan (one star solely for her), and entertaining dialogue, the film is worth the ticket price.
