AGNEEPATH is an uncomplicated story of revenge, is hard-hitting yet entertaining, dwells on strong emotions and aggressive and forceful action, yet is dissimilar from the original. Debutant director Karan Malhotra sponges from the original, but bestows the new version with a fresh texture [screenplay adapted by Ila Bedi Datta and Karan Malhotra]. Krishnan Iyer M.A. [portrayed by Mithun Chakraborty in the original] is done away with, while Malhotra introduces another negative character called Rauf Lala [Rishi Kapoor] to make the proceedings more volatile and explosive. One can envisage the kind of burden the director has shouldered and despite the fact that viewers would be scrutinizing the goings-on with a magnifying glass and watching every frame minutely, you cannot refute the fact that Karan Malhotra has done a remarkable job as a storyteller.
On the whole, AGNEEPATH is a fitting tribute to the masterwork. The movie has all the potential to scale dizzy heights of victory and catapult Hrithik Roshan as the newest member of the 100 cr Club, besides providing the Hindi film industry with the first giant Blockbuster of 2012. A definite winner!

Watch this film because this one is unadulterated Bollywood entertainment. I’ll go with three stars and add half a star for the sheer excitement palpable in those who I watched the film with, first show this morning. Near packed attendance, hearty applause and complete silence in parts. What a bright start, it can only grow from here.
Oh and Bollywood producers – please don’t piggyback trailers of your films on expected blockbusters. Tempting but do avoid – noticed huge impatience among those who trooped into the theatre to catch the first show of Agneepath on a holiday. The trailers were lost.

3 Ups and 3 Downs: Stupendous performances, fresh storyline despite a remake, Chikni Chameli song and cinematography are strengths of the film. Music, editing, long duration are the weak points.
On the whole, Agneepath totally rests on star power which will lure the cine-goers to halls but how far will it impress them remains to be seen.

As Vijay Dinanath Chauhan, Hrithik Roshan has given superb performance. He has not tried to copy Amitabh Bachchan from the original. He has his own distinct way of portraying this role. As brutal Kancha, Sanjay Dutt is electrifying and all thanks to his superb makeup. This role is yet another turning point in his career. Although Priyanka Chopra has less scope in the movie, she has used it to impress the audience. Rishi Kapoor has also delivered an exceptional performance. Zarina Wahab, Om Puri others are also good in their respective languages.

What’s Good: The arresting screenplay; the performances of the cast; the Chikni Chameli song; the raw action; the canvas, the making and the shot takings; the direction.
What’s Bad: The excessive violence, blood and gore; the film is very heavy and a bit too lengthy.
Verdict: Agneepath is a surefire hit, no questions asked! It will shake the box-office today (Republic Day) and in the first weekend.
Loo break: Not really!
Watch or Not?: Watch it for so many reasons but be prepared for gore and violence… plenty of it!

Kaveree Bamzai - India Today - Ratings 4/5
Melodramatic, choir-inducing sentiment, ecstatic. Agneepath is that rare mainstream movie that is written well. Sanjay Dutt's Kancha Cheena speaks Sanskritised Hindi, referencing the epics. Priyanka Chopra's Marathi lilt is a carryover from her cheerful role in Kameeney. Hrithik Roshan, well, Hrithik Roshan just burns silently, seething, waiting, plotting, planning. His gangster is the purest form of criminal because he has no motive but to restore his father's reputation. His father who taught him to work without waiting for results, to recite poetry, how to eat, how to respect life.

Every component of the film falls into place, with a resounding thump. "Agneepath" is brilliant in its brutality. It's a riveting and hectic homage to the spirit of the cinema when revenge reigned supreme. And content was King. This new "Agneepath" takes us back to the era when there was no computer or cellphones. And communication with the audience was immediate and electrifying.

Highpoints:
- The dinner table scene this time is powerful where Vijay is shown grabbing his thali and devouring his mother's food after 15 years. Touching.
- The entire sequence where Vijay rescues his sister from being sold by Rauf Lala is gripping till the time Shiksha learns who Vijay really is. For 15 years, she never knew she had a brother. And, it is only here, that Rishi manages to go top gear in the evil department.
- The climax more than makes up for the weak beginning. Even though there are a few cinematic liberties that the director takes, you as a viewer want to root out the evil.

Hrithik Roshan breathes fire and soul into Agneepath
Director Karan Malhotra has made an impressive film under the able guidance of his mentor, Karan Johar. It scores on all directorial aspects – design, sound, edit, costumes, camera, phenomenal cast, dialogues and a very gripping screenplay.

An earnest Vijay Dinanath Chauhan delivers poetic justice before a nearly packed hall on the proverbial 'first day first show'. Audiences at my cinema respond to the cues and lines. The comments passed sometimes distract you from the screen. Everyone guffaws at the same time. This is the kind of genuine theatre experience, now getting rare, which remains most precious in the life of a film-goer. Reason can take over later. I had a ball!

First-time director Karan Malhotra, along with co-writer Ila Bedi Datta, do away with a bunch of characters like the ones played by Mithun Chakraborty , Goga Kapoor, Sharat Saxena and Deepak Shirke to converge the plot around Hrithik Roshan , Dutt and Kapoor. In place of treading on the first one's revealed structure, they dwell on its subtext, like Vijay Chauhan's (Roshan)  entry and emergence in the world of crime and his rationale behind avenging his father's brutal murder.
For all his Robin-Hoodness, the revised Vijay is much more calculating, coldblooded, bumping off every obstacle in his way (adhering to the Idhar har taaqatwar apne se kam ko maar ke jeeta hai aphorism of Mukul S Anand's protagonist) and sans any reservation towards drug peddling. This story ploy, of Vijay's slyly shifting motives, results in some fine, unpredictable moments in the film.
To me, that's exactly how Agneepath works, less of a remake, more of a tribute.

Mansha Rastogi - Now Running - Ratings 3/5
One of the prerequisites for watching Karan Malhotra's Agneepath version 2012 is that one comes with a clear and open mind as after the initial 20 odd minutes that match up to the original version, the film takes its own course and establishes a new plot, which too mind you, has its own potent standing in the main plot running in the backdrop.
Much against some flaws, Agneepath deserves to be lauded for performances and should be encouraged for a very convincing remake to a cult classic.

Aniruddha Guha - DNA  - Ratings 3.5/5
An adaptation rather than a remake, the film assumes a life of its own once the central plot has been established -- evil Kancha (Sanjay Dutt) frames principled school teacher, Master Dinanath Chauhan, for a crime that results in his death; son Vijay Chauhan (Hrithik Roshan) returns years later to seek revenge. Having dealt with that in the first 20 minutes (as in the original), the film then charts a journey of his own. The film's emotional quotient is balanced with some brilliant, intense action sequences, none of it slick but packing a solid punch, and captured superbly by two very accomplished cinematographers -- Ravi K Chandran and Kiran Deohans. All the scenes depicting Mandwa, and the Ganesh Chaturti sequence, stay with you thanks to deft camera work, and polished post-production.

Zee News - Ratings 3/5
The film, which is a remake of a cult classic starring Big B, has the same story line more or less but director Karan Malhotra introduces some new characters like Rauf Lala(played brilliantly by Rishi Kapoor) and minuses some old ones. When you are making a cult classic, comparisons are inevitable. But Karan Malhotra plays it safe and changes the story to a certain extend to make it a contemporary fresh film. The treatment given to the film is that of a typical masala potboiler which is high on drama, action and emotions. So you have a mother giving birth to a child in the middle of the road, the hero’s sister being assaulted by the villain and hero himself giving long dramatic dialogues in the climax scene. Sounds familiar? Well, let just say that it is flashback 80s hindi cinema.

Gaurav Malani - Times Of India - Ratings:Better than Good
With Bollywood being obsessed with remakes in recent times, Agneepath is an important lesson on how to pay proper tribute to the original. Despite the original being his home production, Karan Johar attempts playing with fire (treading uncharted territory) with Agneepath and emerges victorious. Agneepath has the fire for a lustrous entertainer!
