Charlie ( Abhishek Bachchan) is the catalyst behind the mission to steal gold worth crores for himself and his role model Victor Dada ( Vinod Khanna). While Bilal ( Sikander Kher) as the explosive expert and Rony ( Bobby Deol) as the illusionist make a brief cameo, it is Johnny Lever as the auto expert and Sunny ( Omi Vaidya) as the makeup expert who do manage to tickle the funny bone with their usual antics. On the other hand, Abhishek once again reprises the character of Dhoom he seems to have perfected while Bipasha goes glam as in Race.Sonam Kapoor (Naina) joins the team in the second half (though she is there in bits and piece in the first half). But eventually, it is Neil Nitin Mukesh (Spider), the ultimate no-strings-attached man, wild gambler at heart with a twist in the soul and tango in the feet, who slam dances his way away as the ultimate crook.

3 Ups and 3 Downs:  Direction by Abbas-Mustan, Cinematography and edgy plotline are the strong points. Music, dialogues, performances besides Bips and Neil are the weak points.
On the whole, Players is not flawless but can be given a shot for once.

On the whole, PLAYERS rides mainly on the clout of its credible director duo [Abbas-Mustan], daredevil stunts and stunning visuals. But, most importantly, it is deficient of a captivating screenplay. Also, the film could have done with judicious trimming for an enhanced impact. I for one went in with colossal expectations, but came out feeling downcast and disheartened.

What’s Good: The train robbery sequence; some comedy in the second half; Omi Vaidya and Neil Nitin Mukesh’s acting.
What’s Bad: The loose and uninteresting screenplay; the poor music; the dull acting of Abhishek, Sonam and Bobby.
Verdict: All that glitters is not gold. This gold rush adventure will not see people rushing to the cinemas.

Loo break: Several, especially after interval.
Watch or Not?: Watch it for the stylised shooting.

The real problem with this official remake of The Italian Job is that instead of reproducing a perfectly nuanced screenplay as it is, it tries to act too smart, with excessive elements and needless tampering, in the process making a complete fool of itself.  Why can't you stick to the plan, Bollywood? All this time we witness our filmmakers rip-off Hollywood scene-by-scene but the minute they acquire rights, they are hit by an army of brainwaves or an insuppressible need to improvise (read flounder).

Adapting from a book and adapting from another film have one constant: both are subjected to comparison. That aside, the larger argument here is whether adapting from a film is ethical or not. Some directors respond to this reflexively, saying that it only helps narrate a good story to a larger audience or that it is a fond tribute. But a remake of ‘The Italian Job’ which makes the defining chase sequence look like a rickshaw chugging over monsoon-corroded roads refutes both these rationales. Definitely a job taken not so seriously.

The movie is all about a gang of skillful, stylish and sharp players, who who team up to carry out a heist. Unlike The Italian Job, Players lacks a captivating screenplay. Abbas-Mustan have added some extra elements, which were not there in the original classic and they make the movie very lengthy and boring. Trimming of certain sequences could have enhanced impact of the movie.
